Arm Liposuction

Have you noticed the Obama effect?  The Michelle Obama effect that is.  Since the super-fit first lady first began displaying her toned and sculpted upper arms, it seems every woman on US TV now also has taut and toned biceps as well.  Not a “bingo wing” in sight. But how are we lesser mortals to achieve these defined and sculpted arms? As there are few muscles to tone under the arm, no amount of exercise will have the desired effect for some women. A cosmetic treatment called arm liposuction may offer a solution.

The primary goal of arm liposuction is to help a woman feel more confident when wearing short sleeved clothing. The goal is not to remove the maximum possible amount of fat but instead to give a slimmer, more sculpted upper arm, which has an overall slimming effect on the appearance of the upper body. As we age the pendulous drooping flap of the skin hanging from an arm when it is held outstretched can look very unsightly.

Technological advances have greatly improved arm lipo techniques.  Older methods  used to include an excision of skin from the inner side of the arm which resulted in unsightly scars. With cutting edge tumescent liposuction of the arms, using microcannulas, excision of skin is not necessary. Microcannulas are blunt tipped tools which are the width of a regular needle and allow injections to be made without leaving noticeable scars on the skin.  Multiple small incisions give access to the entire circumference of the arm but always disappear quickly in light-skin patients. A thin layer of residual fat should remain to insure a natural female appearance

Immediately after the surgery, patients may feel somewhat sore and bruised – many arm liposuction patients describe it as “a heavy workout feeling.” You will probably want to rest your arms as much as possible for 4-5 days. For up to four weeks after the surgery, you will be instructed to wear a compression sleeve that wraps around your arm to hold the treated area firmly in place. Your arm will likely experience some swelling and bruising, but the more faithfully you wear the compression sleeve, the faster this will diminish. Any scarring will be nearly invisible.

Like all cosmetic surgical procedures expectations of arm liposuction should be realistic. It is intended to remove small fat deposits and other problem areas that diet and exercise cannot solve. Not everyone is suitable and candidates should not be more than 10-15 pounds overweight. Even slim women can benefit as underarm flab occurs in adults of all ages, even young and generally fit people.
